History of The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

The museum started in 1935 as the San Francisco Museum of Art. Its first director was Grace L. McCann Morley, an art historian and museologist. In the following year, the museum made history when it established its photography collection, becoming one of the first museums to recognise photography as an influential art and display some of the most important works within the discipline. Also, SFMOMA held its first architecture display in 1940. The museum temporarily left its venue for a few months in 1945 to attend the United Nations Conference on International Organisation.

The museum became a global attraction under director Henry T. Hopkins, who added the word ‘Modern’ to its name in 1975. In 2009, there were plans for expansion to make it the most prominent modern art museum globally. The design for its new LEED Gold-certified building was by Snøhetta and Mario Botta. In 2016, the museum opened again to the public after its closure for expansion in 2013.
