Lanzarote Wineries: Unique Flavors from a Lunar Landscape

Where to Enjoy a Glass of Wine in Lanzarote

The volcanic landscape of Lanzarote and its stellar vineyards look a bit like you’ve landed on the moon. And that’s one of the reasons they make exquisite wine there. Ash remaining in the soil after a 1730 volcanic eruption has created unique flavor profiles cultivated by generations of local winemakers. These “impossible vineyards” stand out with their bright green vines peppered across the black, ashen landscape, each grown in its own crater.

The best vineyards, called bodegas, offer tours where you can learn even more about the landscape, the winemaking process (including the one-of-a-kind dry cultivation process called enarenado), and the varietals that are special to the island. Some also have restaurants to pair a meal with your wine selection.

1. El Grifo

There are numerous ways to explore El Grifo. Maybe you prefer the freedom of a self-guided audio tour or to tour the wine museum in a group. If you’re looking for the full experience, book the “Wine Lovers” tour that includes a knowledgeable guide, access to historic areas, and a taste of several wine and cheese pairings.
