Ravenna

What you need to know before you go

Ravenna boasts a rich, fascinating history – not least because its long-running heyday began in 402 AD, when it served as the capital for the Western Roman Empire. Many remnants of its past remain today, the most famous of which are its breathtakingly vibrant mosaics that adorn its terracotta brick churches.

Must-sees include the Basilica di San Vitale, the Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, and the Mausoleo di Galla Placidia. Once you've checked those off your site-see list, the city has plenty more to enjoy: small boutiques, traditional pizzerias, trattorias, and quaint cafes are all in good supply.
