While the Stanley Dock Tobacco Warehouse is no longer a functioning warehouse today, its deeply rooted history continues. At 38 metres high and with a span across 15 hectares, it’s still quite a large building, even by today’s standards. In its entirety, the building’s construction took 27 million bricks, 30,000 panes of glass and 8,000 tonnes of steel.

The warehouse remained functional up until the 1980s when trade began to dissipate. The building began to crumble into disrepair, but eventually became a space for a variety of events, such as the Sunday Heritage Market, a rave and a range of live music events.

Highlights of Stanley Dock Tobacco Warehouse

Today, the Stanley Dock Tobacco Warehouse has been renovated to contain apartments, but it maintains the beauty and structural integrity of the original building. Naturally, while you can’t tour inside, it is well worth a stroll around the perimeter outside.

Liverpool has no shortage of other monuments and historical sites. The Memorial to Heroes of the Marine Engine Room is a monument nearby that was designed to remember 32 engineers who died in the Titanic’s tragic sinking. In particular, the Titanic was related to Liverpool in that Liverpool was both the Titanic port of registry and the home of the ship’s owner White Star Line.
