The glowing reviews that gave me the confidence to book a room here didn’t tell the full story. This property is rustic: water-stained walls, ants crawling in the sink, a steep, narrow, rusty staircase, stained threadbare pillowcases, and no floor-to-ceiling wall between the shower/toilet and the bedroom. If you’re OK with those things, Give it a try for an excellent beach view.
Other challenges caused us to move to a nearby hotel. We often carry valuables that we prefer to store in a safe place. When we asked for a key to the safe, we were told they didn’t have one but would look for one. They didn’t. We weren’t willing to open our sliding door at night without a safe. Though we assumed our balcony neighbors were trustworthy, there was little preventing them from entering our room with the door open. Because we weren’t willing to sleep with an open door, we needed the air conditioning unit to cool our room. Unfortunately, it didn’t work, and upon inspection, the night staff said it could not be repaired. Since we didn’t feel safe sleeping with an open door and knew we couldn’t sleep in a hot room, we left at 11 pm and found what we felt was a safer and more comfortable hotel a block away. Hotel Peix declined to refund any portion of our stay despite being unable to deliver basic security or comfort. If you choose to stay there, manage your expectations related to comfort and security (in exchange for an excellent ocean view). We hoped this would be a gem. It wasn't.
