Japanese Shipwreck in Bali

The Japanese shipwreck is a popular diving site in Lipah Bay. Located around 7 km off the coast of Lipah Beach, this 20-metre-long wreck of a Japanese freighter is about 6 to 10 metres underwater. The waters are relatively calm, so good swimmers can make their way to the site with just a mask and snorkel.

Japanese shipwreck highlights

Thanks to the shallow position of the wreck, you can enjoy fairly good visibility throughout the year. The ship’s propeller is covered with large gorgonian fans and sponges, attracting schools of small reef fish and nudibranchs. It’s quite a small wreck compared to other wrecked ships in Bali, but it attracts macro photographers looking to catch sight of the elusive pygmy seahorses.

Lipah Bay has coarse, black sand strewn with pebbles, along with local fishermen’s outriggers parked in a neat row. Divers also call it Lipah Beach, Banyuning Beach (after a neighbouring coastal hamlet), and Pondok Vienna Beach (after the Vienna Beach Resort).
