Wonderful 100 year old cottage in a historic area
We stayed in the 2 bedroom Barkley Cottage for a week with our family of four. Check in was easy, we received a door code before we arrived. There are three “cottages” which are all in the same 1924 duplex house. Each has a separate exterior entrance. The 2 bedroom cottage is one half of the original duplex, while the other half has been retrofitted into two smaller one bedroom cottages. Our cottage had a family room, dining room, full kitchen, 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. It was sparkling clean, and very tastefully decorated. We really enjoyed the gas fireplace in the family room, and made good use of the kitchen to cook several meals. It had all the pots, pans, tools, and utensils we needed to cook a variety of meals. Keep in mind the house is 100 years old, so it has all the creaks and quirks of an old house. We like this sort of thing, and thought it was perfect.
The neighborhood around the house is the best part. We walked every day and covered nearly every street within a mile or two radius, and in my opinion, the 8 block stretch of Arch Street (where the house is located on) going south is the nicest stretch of historical homes from the 1880s through the 1920s in the whole city. Its also only a 10 minute walk over to the very cool shops and restaurants on South Main Street. That being said, it’s a urban area and there are some sketchy characters passing through, so you might want to do your exploring during the day rather than at night.
