Wessex Hotel - Bournemouth

Efficient, polite staff, good breakfast. Room clean but decor somewhat dated which is common with most hotels of this size and age. Overall very satisfactory. Ample free parking appreciated as some Bournemouth hotels charge extortionate amounts for parking.

Generally good, featuring pleasant service and useful swimming and gym facilities, although two points for improvement: 1. There should be a hand rail on wall above bath, for safety reasons 2. Food quality poor (breakfast: rubbery fried eggs/greasy mushrooms, bacon, sausage, potato; evening meal: not good value - papodum and naan stale/ rice bland/ […] gammon steak dry, etc). Læs mere

We had a lovely time staying at the Wessex, Staff extremely welcoming and friendly, even the dog was made a fuss of!! ;oD Nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was great, plenty of choice and the Spa facilities were just lovely to take sometime to make the whole time a relaxing break.The only small criticism i have and it is a very small one is that […] the decor in the corridors and the rooms although clean and tidy is a little outdated and could do with a refurb.That said it did not take away the enjoyment we had whilst we stayed. Pleasant room, if a bit on the small side. Shower extremely week, probably due to being on the 4h floor. Clean & tidy if a little tired & dated in places Staff very nice and helpful

The appearance of the hotel from the car park let's the hotel down. Looks tired and paintwork peeling off. Once inside the lobby is clean and tidy. Room was tired - looked like it hadn't been decorated for 20 years. Having said that - bed was very comfortable and shower was lovely. Room was very big. Was a little noisy where we were located as the floorboards […] in the corridor creaked everytime someone passed by our room. Indoor swimming pool was very small but good for kids. Sauna and steam room were fine. Had a wonderful massage. Overall if you want good value for money and have a young children this hotel is ideal. Staff were friendly. Læs mere

We were very pleased with the helpfulness of the staff - we arrived early to find out where the hotel was ( as we weren't going to be able to check in properly till that evening) however the receptionist rearranged our room number so that we could have a key & put our luggage in there straight away! When we came that evening the receptionist booked […] us into the restaurant which was great as it was a Saturday night & the children were too tired to go out. The room was spacious and big enough to accomodate the 2 extra beds we needed (for our 9 and 13 yr olds). One bed was a bit rickity and fell apart a bit so the 9 yr had that one & it was ok for her weight. The girls were eager to use the circular indoor swimming pool (as warm as a bath!) It could have been a bit cleaner as there were bits floating around in the water. The reception bar area is lovely and spacious, decor through the rest of the hotel needs updating. Breakfast was great!!! Help yourself to as much as you want - lovely selection of hot and cold food. Good position for walking to the beach and into town. And plenty of parking spaces. Læs mere

Went as party of 3: 2 adults, 1 child. Location was perfect: short walk to West Cliff 'Zig Zag' down to beach, easy walk into town, whilst in quiet neighbourhood and easy to drive out of Bournemouth. Ample parking, impressive reception area and spacious, well-appointed family room with large bathroom. Substantial breakfast choice. Pool was well-heated, […] clean and a decent size compared to some hotel pools; we spent lots of time in it. Children's swimming hours are shorter on weekdays, so we'd have breakfast, then a rest, then go swimming. Sauna was clean, quiet and also a reasonable size. Outdoor pool is in a suntrap, but not open until end April so didn't try it. Staff friendly and attentive. Only minor quibble is that the child's bed was on small side: the hotel's classification of children is under 14, but I think many 13-year-olds would find the child's bed too short. It wasn't for lack of floorspace, as our family room was beautifully spacious. Would like to go again, and would recommend to families and couples. Good value stay, lovely hotel. Læs mere

A very nice hotel, friendly staff, lovely breakfast. Room a little tired looking, but large family room, clean and comfortable. Great location for the BIC and a good price.

We chose this hotel for the leisure facilities - in particular the sauna/steam rooms which were great. We were visiting my newly born grandaughter who lives close by. The location was good too - within 5 minutes from the seafront and close to the shopping centre. Would highly recommend this hotel.

the hotel breakfast needs to be worked on, always running out of food and to much grease. The cold counter always looks like a bomb had hit it. Regards F Searle

This is a lovely hotel but it is at the top of a steep hill with Bournemouth at the bottom; and out of season the lifts and train do not operate during the week.

As regular visitors to Bournemouth my wife and I had often visited the hotel for a late drink or excellent meal in the Amalfi restaurant beneath. However, thanks to Hotel.com, we were able to stay for a long weekend in March. We were attending a concert at the BIC and the Wessex is well placed for this and the Pavillion. Our room was a little disappointing […] due to its small size and useless shower! We were on the 4th floor in the annexe. However, as we were only there for 3 nights we didn't mention anything to Reception. But the room was quiet and we slept well on a comfortable bed. Breakfast was buffet and plentiful. The bar and lounge are bright and comfortable. All the staff that we encountered were polite, helpful and friendly. I would definitely stay there again but would check the room and shower first!! tay a Friday and Saterday night. Nice reception and Bar area, Our first choice twin room was dull and scruffy. Spoke to threcptionist and she gave us a double much nicer at the front of the hotel. TV reception poor Bar was as usual in a hotel very expensive, why do they drive customers to the pubs over the road? Super breakfast. Nice pool again a […] bit scruffy but very warm. Two really nice days at this lovely hotel. Our room wasn't 'modern' ( i.e. black leather furniture and gnome-size bathroom) and it overlooked a yard, but it was a good size, the decor was co-ordinated and pleasing, beds were really comfy, big bathroom, person-size bath, endless hot water, everything worked and was sensibly arranged. Bedside lights that […] you could reach without contortions, hairdrier beside a desk/dresser with a mirror etc.. and all spotless. Public rooms were swish and contemporary but felt friendly nevertheless (we saw a black-tie & ball-gowns function gathering one night and people dropping in for a pint whilst watching the big screen rugby next day............all of whom were greeting and chatting like it was their local pub!). Very unexpected in such a big old hotel. Really nice. Staff were friendly & helpful and it really is only a 5min. walk to the cliff-top path by the sea and a 15min. walk into town. The (included) breakfast was serve-yourself everything from full-English to fruit and was all delicious. The Italian restaurant in the basement was charming and we had a lovely meal there at a reasonable price. The title says it all! Tip for a v. cheap (or free if you're a pensioner) trip.....open-top bus runs from Bournmouth town centre to Swanage, all along the lovely Dorset coast , NT Studland peninsular, ferry-ride included!. My wife and I had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay at the Wessex hotel. The hotel was very clean and the staff were polite and helpful. we booked earlyal and I must say it was excellent value for money. I would definately stay in this hotel again.

stay was very short, just one night for business. but the room was clean and comfortable, and very good value for money. breakfast was good, though the service was lacking slightly as they had a coach load of pensioners to serve who seemed to get priority...

Booked this great looking hotel because it had a pool for the kids, was easily within walking distance of the town and was reasonably priced. It was well worth the stay. The staff are friendly, the room we were in was a very large family room which had enough spare floor space for the kids to dance to the music on the TV, and the breakfast was wonderful. We stayed 3 nights here as a couple. Our room was quite small but well-appointed. The bed was extremely comfy-we slept very well. Also it was quiet at night in the hotel. It's in a handy location near the pier. We arrived after 10pm on the friday but were pleased to find that the italian restaurant attached to the hotel was still open and we enjoyed […] a home-cooked, authentic meal there. The hotel has a lovely pool (free to guests) and fitness room with sauna and steam room. The breakfast was 10/10 - full English, cereal, fish, yoghurt, croissants and the tea/coffee were brought to order at your table. Staff were courteous at all times. The decor needs some refurb, especially the carpets - looking a little worn and dated and carpets in need of a clean in the restaurant. Sat eve we ate in the restaurant as they were offering a deal including wine. The meal was good value for money, well-presented and tasty. The Free car park was a nice bonus. What a great old place. Lots of character and we had adjoining rooms as there were 5 of us and it was huge. Had dinner in the restaurant which was very nice and reasonably priced.

We and our dog had a pleasant front facing room with a sea view . The staff were friendly to us and dog. Only a few minutes from the West Cliff walk and less than 10 minutes to the Bournemouth International Centre and beach.Free ample car parking.

stayed at Bournemouth to see the great BOB DYLAN, found this hotel on the internet. Although the decor was absolutely yuk and very dated, and the shower in the bathroom was impossible to control(just a mixer tap over the bath, going from red hot to freezing cold and sometimes just nothing at all!). the staff were very friendly and the breakfast was […] great. Having booked a last minute 7 day holiday, on arrival we were given a different room to the orignial booking, but the hotel eventually changed it. The downstairs of the hotel which is lovely unfortunately the rooms upstairs are very dated and in need of attention the shower kept going off because of the water pressure. Breakfast time, if you hadnt booked […] a dance weekend you were put into a big white side room away from other guests. Breakfast was good but could do with a bit more variety of fruit other than melon, oranges and prunes. There is alot of staff during breakfast time but did not seem to be orgainsed. Læs mere

I stayed at this hotel with my daughter for a weekend. We chose this hotel as it had its own leisure centre and was situated within walking distance of the town centre. We were disappointed with our room which was on the ground floor, very dated and quite shabby - although the beds were very comfortable. The hotel facade also needed updating and the […] walls in the indoor pool required cleaning where things had previously been on them but now removed. We only ate breakfast at the hotel (a good selection was available) but we had to wait some time to be seated and although there appeared to be enough staff it was rather disorganised and some of the staff had difficulty conversing in English. Hotel staff freindly, buffet breakfast very nice, both outdoor and indoor pools are heated, which surprised me when I jumped in expecting it to be freezing and it was lovely and warm :-D Just a short walk to a lovely beach, and not too far to walk into the city […] centre. Apart from the ageing decor in the hotel, we were pleased with our very large family room. It was clean and had everything we would need. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice and the staff were helpful. The 2 swimming pools were a big plus for us. This provides an alternative way of passing a few hours with the children if the weather isn't as good. […] We used both pools and they were really well heated and not overly busy. Plenty car parking too and the beach is just a short walk, a matter of minutes away. Overall, I would recommend it to others (if you can get your head around the 1980's look). Læs mere

The staff at the hotel were extremely helpful and friendly. The breakfast was good. The leisure facilities were excellent and well managed. The paintwork in the corridors needed refreshing and the carpet in the lift needed replacing. Reception and front areas very nice but when you leave these areas a very different view. The bedroom we had definitely needed a lot of TLC, the bed was hard and a little on the small side and the cover did not cover both of us. The shower over the bath which was fed from the bath's mixer taps was either boiling hot or freezing cold, no control over […] it whatsoever. The Restaurant had certainly seen better days, the food was ok (we only had breakfast) but if you didn't like Cornflakes there wasn't anything else - not on the 2 mornings we had breakfast. The staff all looked fed up and were not very helpful. (One man on his own with 2 small children asked for another coffee but he never got it) The food in the bar was good and the staff there very helpful. We didn't use the pool as there was a notice up saying the heating system wasn't working and the water maybe colder than normal. We only stayed 2 nights over the Bournemouth Air Show but don't think we would stay again, would pay that bit extra to stay somewhere nicer. If the hotel had a bit of money spent on it, rooms decorated new bigger beds, bedding, curtains and carpets it would be a much nicer place. The Restaurant also needs updating and perhaps a few more happy faces. Læs mere

Generally comfortable stay - with a very good breakfast. Hotel is looking a little threadbare - in need of a bit of TLC - particularly true of our room - stained wallpaper and lumpy mattress. Pool was great and surprisingly deserted despite the hotel looking pretty full. Really objected to running the gauntlet of tobacco smoke at the main entrance - […] disgusting they need to move the smoking area for guests somehwere else! We enjoyed our stay so much we stayed for an extra three nights .

We spent 2 nights in the Wessex hotel and although it is in serious need of updating we had a pleasant stay. The rooms were small with old furniture however very clean and reception were on hand to provide anything we needed. Good location for the beach and town centre and the bar staff were very helpful in recommending bars and restaurants.

I was not happy with the service at the reception, both when we checked in and checked out. The girls weren't polite and helpful at all. When we checked out they were kind of rude as well. We arrived late in the evening and we had dinner at the italian restaurant next door, which was very nice actually. The room and the bathroom were quite big, but […] not very comfotable. Eeverything was very old and needed to be renovated. I would expect more for the price we've paid. They gave us a room which was a bit in a corner, dark and overlooking the roof of the kitchen, which was not nice, although we have booked and paid well in advance. The spa center it's quite old and the sauna and steam bath need serious renovation. The breakfast was good and the location wasn't that bad as it's near bars and the beach. Læs mere

The Wessex is a sprawling - properties combined - but not unattractive hotel, located approximately 8/10 minutes walk from the Westcliffe beach, the Pier and the Bournemouth International Centre. There is a leisure centre next door and plenty of free parking for hotel guests. An Italian restaurant - run independently to the hotel - is attached to the […] Wessex building. Our double room was perfectly adequate - it was compact and pleasant, very clean and with all the usual facilities in good working order. The staff we met were all courteous and polite including a most helpful night receptionist whose assistance we were grateful for after discovering after midnight we had left a valuable item at a non-local establishment. Breakfast, which was tasty with prompt service, was well organised and served in nice surroundings. Overall therefore we were pleased with the 2 night package, enjoying our stay at what we considered to be a reasonable cost. Læs mere

A very pleasant hotel and we could not fault any aspect of it. Our room was in what the staff called the 'new wing' so I don't know if our excellent, large room was typical of the rest. It is a pleasant walk from the town but uphill on the way home! We are looking forward to further visits to this hotel.

The hotel staff worked hard to make our stay enjoyable. The reception is very presentable, but once you go into the corridors, the hotel is starting to show signs of it's age with peeling wallpaper, heavily stained carpets (especially the dining room upper level) and flaking paint. The breakfasts were very good, however the decor put us off staying […] in for any further meals. This was not a problem as there are many good eateries locally. We had a blood stain on our shower curtain the size of a 50p piece, which took 2 days to change, otherwise the rooms were okay, if alittle on the small side. Læs mere

Pleasant staff, wonderful location close to beach and shops, lovely Irish bar 2 mins away not far to stagger back to hotel! Our room was upgraded to a suite when we arrived and was superb, decor a little dated but very clean and comfortable, would go back, very good value for money.

The hotel staff were some of the most helpfull and friendliest we have encountered anywhere in the world. We just came to stay in Bournemouth for a quiet getaway and this hotel fitted the bill almost perfectly. The breakfast and the service we received was excellent. The hotel was in quite good condition generally, and in the public areas (dining, reception […] etc.) was very good. The Room was a standard room and although clean and comfortable it could do with some updating, especially in the shower/bath department, which was a bit outdated and not very good.. However we enjoyed our stay and would recomend it . Læs mere

We stayed at the Wessex Hotel for two nights. When we arrived we were greated by a friendly smilling young receptionist who was very welcoming. Our room was not large but suited us well. There was a good digital TV (which I was pleased to see did not have to be left continuously on stand by as I have found in other hotels.) There were two comfortable […] chairs, tea and coffee with making tray. The bathroom was fine with a continuously hot towel rail. The Breakfast was first class and served in a very pleasant dinning room. All Staff were pleasant, friendly and helpful throughout, reception was manned all the time. There are places in the corridors to the bedrooms that need some decoration as they have been scratched, possibly caused by luggage. All in all a very enjoyable few days and I would deffinitely stay there again. Læs mere
